The Importance of Self-Care
Are you well? Does it take an illness for you to stop and give yourself a break or a bit of time-out? We are more inclined to look after our illness than our wellness. Self-care is very important as it’s anything that maintains your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing and so helps you live a more fulfilling life.
Self-care should not be something you do just once when you feel off. It should be a bit of love and attention for YOU; your own mind, body, soul. However when we’re stressed self-care is usually the first thing to go. We get too pressured, overwhelmed and tired to have alone time, we work through lunch, we stop visiting the gym, and we postpone commitments with friends. Everyday life can seem so busy these days.
The irony is the more you care for yourself the better you cope with the stresses of everyday life. When you are well and look after yourself you have more energy and resilience. Self-care can reduce stress, prevent burnout, increase happiness, improve relationships and promote more of a work-life balance. Looking after yourself benefits those around you too!
Start off by working self-care into your daily routine. There are many tiny habits that you can do every day to nurture yourself. No matter what you have or have not achieved that day, self-care is crucial. It isnot selfish and it is not a reward. A reward is earned as a result of something accomplished. Self-care should be done with love and compassion rather than obligation and duty because taking care of yourself is so important.
